Harborfest 26 July 2008

Living where I do, there’s not exactly a whole lot of excitement (hence my computer habits). But each year this one weekend in July rolls around when there are actually people in town - mostly drunks, but hey - and a decent amount of fun things to go see and do. It’s called Harborfest.

Essentially, it’s a music festival, though it’s got some other stuff as well. Last night Joan Jett was in town, performing on the main stage, which is located on the opposite side of the city from my house - across the river and at least a couple of miles away. My family and I didn’t bother going to the concert, as it’s pretty much guaranteed that we would’ve had to park like ten blocks away, and besides, it would’ve been packed. So we hung out with my dad’s friends, who come up every year from Louisiana with their Cajun catering business, and listened to a jazz group at a stage closer to our house.

In retrospect, it kind of amazes me that we were able to hear the jazz music at all, because on the walk home, we could hear Joan Jett like we were a block or two from her concert. I don’t even want to think about how loud it would have been if we’d actually been at the show. My parents are always talking about how my iPod is going to make me deaf, but I think that probably would’ve done it in one night.

Plus, my mom would’ve been a total geek singing along - now, to get me back for saying that, she’ll probably consciously try to be a super-geek at the Joan Jett and Journey/Cheap Trick/Heart concerts next month. Oh well. I’ll be singing horrendously off-key to Don’t Stop Believin’ and I Want You To Want Me, so I guess I shouldn’t be talking.

Anyways, Harborfest is also a great time for food. The bread pudding at Louisiana On Wheels (the aforementioned Cajun catering business) is absolutely amazing. An added bonus? I’m able to eat it, despite my currently malfunctioning mouth. Another fantastic item of Harborfest cuisine I was able to suck down? A deep-fried Twinkie. Which, by the way, was the epitome of utterly magnificent artery-clogging goodness, especially considering it was also coated in powdered sugar. Mmmm.

Though afterwards, it did cause slight digestive chaos.
